SUMMARY:Jacksonville “Walk Through History” Tour
DESCRIPTION:Walk through Jacksonville History!  \nJACKSONVILLE\, OR—Jacksonville’s “Walk through History” tours are back!  At 10 a.m. every Saturday from May 30th through September 5th\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be offering one-hour guided walks through Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District\, the first on the West Coast!  Participants will take a stroll through history\, visiting government and commercial buildings\, fraternal lodges\, and homes that capture the stories of the people who transformed a gold rush town into Southern Oregon’s 19th Century social\, governmental\, and commercial hub. They’ll learn how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it.  \nWalking tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic “Courthouse Square”) at 206 North 5th Street between West C and D streets and cover about one mile with multiple stops.   Tours are FREE but donations are encouraged!  All monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of Jacksonville’s historic buildings.  \nFor individuals who prefer not to “stretch their legs\,” Historic Jacksonville’s website (https://www.historicjacksonville.org) offers numerous ways to explore Jacksonville virtually.  These include multiple blogs about the town and its settlers along with three video tours that introduce viewers to Jacksonville’s Historic Landmark District\, its Historic Homes\, and its Pioneer Cemetery.    \nHistoric Jacksonville\, Inc. invites you to forget the “names\, dates\, places\, and battles” version of history you may have been taught in school.  HJI’s live and virtual tours are about “real history”—people and their stories. They are about life!  \nAdditional information on “Walk through History” and other Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. tours is available at 541-245-3650; info@historicjacksonville.org; and www.historicjacksonville.org. \n

SUMMARY:SOCAN General Meeting: In Cold Blood: The global warming guillotine for our buggy friends and foes.
DESCRIPTION:SUBJECT InCold Blood: The global warming guillotine for our buggy friends and foes. \nYou may have heard that some pests and diseases are movingnorth. Wonder why? \nOne of the least discussed impacts of global warming andrelated trends is how they affect living systems that are important to us. Inthis presentation Southern Oregon Climate Action Now cofacilitator Dr. AlanJournet will discuss how we are affecting the viability of many of our temperaturedependent friends and foes in the natural world. Many of these are crittersthat derive body heat from the surrounding environment. Journet will explainwhy and how these creatures are temperature dependent.  He will also discuss how regional temperaturetrends influence range shift\, and how warming affects migratory bird nestingsuccess. The discussion will also explore what climate change means for manycritical diseases and pests\, notably bark beetles and our forests\, and howmonarchs and other butterflies are affected. Journet will close with a briefdiscussion of the impact of carbon dioxide increase on our natural andagricultural world. \nSOCAN’s general meetings are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Shakey Graves at The Britt Festival Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Across his career\, Shakey Graves—a.k.a. the performance moniker of Austin\, Texas-born Alejandro Rose-Garcia—has intentionally created thrilling musical adventures tailored to each fan: burning CDs and putting them in personalized decorated bags; building intricate scavenger hunts that send fans in search of unique tapes; and Bandcamp-exclusive releases. \n“The fans and musicians that really resonate with me—and the inexplicable ways that I find things that I like—are usually entirely through randomness and chaos and accident\,” Rose-Garcia says. “I’ve always been on this quest to make people feel like my own music is a choose your own adventure.” \nIn 2024 Rose-Garcia celebrated the ten year anniversary of his And The War Came album with a special 10 Year Anniversary Edition release featuring never before heard demos and b-sides from the recording process and inviting fans to enter the long-since abandoned Music House. \nHis story continues to unfold\, but Shakey Graves Is Still A Gentleman From Texas.

SUMMARY:Dark Star Orchestra at The Britt Festival Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Performing to critical acclaim for nearly 30 years and over 3300 shows\, Dark Star Orchestra continues the Grateful Dead live concert experience. The seven-piece band performs shows based on actual Grateful Dead set lists from their 30 years of touring\, or creates unique sets from the Dead’s extensive catalog. This approach allows fans both young and old to share in the experience while offering a continually evolving artistic outlet within this musical canon. Dark Star Orchestra offers much more than just the sound of the Grateful Dead—they truly encapsulate the energy and experience. It’s about that sense of familiarity and contagious energy that creates the complete concert experience fans expect. The band has featured guest performances from six original Grateful Dead members: Phil Lesh\, Bob Weir\, Bill Kreutzmann\, Mickey Hart\, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay\, Vince Welnick\, and Tom Constanten\, plus longtime Dead soundman Dan Healy. Other notable guests have included Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman of Phish\, Warren Haynes\, Steve Kimock\, and many more. “For us it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic that was created for us over the years\,” explains keyboardist and vocalist Rob Barraco. “We offer a sort of historical perspective at what it might have been like to go to a show in 1985\, 1978 or whenever. Even for Deadheads who can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s\, we offer something they never got to see live.”
