SUMMARY:1870s Beekman House Tours: Victorian Medical Practices
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Medical Practices \nWhen the “cure” could be deadlier than the cause! \nLearn about doctors\, medicine\, andhealth concerns in late 1800s Jacksonville when Historic Jacksonville\, Inc.opens the historic Beekman House on Saturday and Sunday\, September 19 and 20\,for Victorian Medical Practices tours. The 1870s house\, located at 470 E.California\, was home to Jacksonville’s wealthiest and most prominent pioneerfamily. But prominence and wealth could not buy health care that did notexist or insulate the family from the many epidemics that raged throughout thecountry.  \nIn the late 1800s\, Victorians were concerned about health above almostall other issues of the day. The discovery of germs led to major advances inhygiene and sanitation. But when the Beekman home was built in the early 1870s\,most doctors were still “practitioners” lacking any formal medical education;hospitals were virtually non-existent; epidemics wiped out large numbers ofresidents; and cocaine\, heroin\, opium\, alcohol\, mercury\, and strychnine werethe base of many medicines. \nGuided 1-hour house tours discussing the local health careavailable in the late 1800s\, sharing stories of Beekman health issues and“cures\,” and pointing out sanitation measures the family adopted will beginevery 20 minutes from 12 noon through 3pm. Tours are $10; toursize is capped; reservations are encouraged. \nhttps://historicjacksonville.org/victorian-theme-tours/

When our town is full of bargain hunters and treasure seekers\, parking becomes an issue in some areas. Here are some basic guidelines to follow during the busy weekend. SUMMARY:Artists in the Garden” at McCully House Inn
DESCRIPTION:By Anne Brooke \nWHENMY 10 YEARS with Art Presence Art Center ended\, it enabled me to return to myStudio/Gallery to provide classes in Life Drawing\, Beginning Drawing\,Watercolor\, Calligraphy and Colored Pencil—just doing what I have loved doingfor forty years. \nThree years ago\, I approached Britt Festivals’ Abby McKeeabout providing art during Britt Classical Concerts; after all the venue wascalled Britt Festival of Music and Art. At the time\, the only art at the festivalwas the annual commissioned festival poster\, so Abby agreed and “Art at theBritt” was born. Six fine artists: Nancy and Kim Sterling\, Lauren Card\, DesmondSerratore\, Susan Burnes and Alx Fox joined me in exhibiting on the grounds. Ithas been wonderfully successful with lots of positive support. \nThe McCully House Inn is also providing us with a venueto exhibit our work for two days in September at an event called\, “Artists inthe Garden.” This willcoincide with the “Jacksonville Jubilee” event put on by theJacksonville Chamber of Commerce. \nPlease join me onSeptember 12 and 13\, from 1-7pm\, in their beautiful garden behind the inn—I look forward to meeting and sharing a mutualappreciation for art in this incredible town.
