DESCRIPTION:Join the Southern Oregon Historical Society between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday\, September 19 and 20\, at SOHS Hanley Farm for our 15th Annual “Scarecrow and Harvest Festival!”  Hanley Farm is located at 1053 Hanley Road\, Central Point\, just a mile outside of Jacksonville. Admission is FREE! Make a scarecrow to protect your home and gardens from any prowling “witches\, ghosties\, and ghoulies\,”or to add to your fall decor! Scarecrow kits will be available for $20 ($15 for SOHS members) and include everything needed to make a full-size\, old-fashioned\, straw-stuffed scarecrow. Take your finished scarecrow home OR enter it in the “People’s Choice” scarecrow contest and pick it up on Sunday at 3 PM.  Plus there will be loads of free family-fun activities including pumpkin painting\, apple bobbing\, children’s games\, and much more! The discovery of germs led to major advances inhygiene and sanitation. But when the Beekman home was built in the early 1870s\,most doctors were still “practitioners” lacking any formal medical education;hospitals were virtually non-existent; epidemics wiped out large numbers ofresidents; and cocaine\, heroin\, opium\, alcohol\, mercury\, and strychnine werethe base of many medicines. \nGuided 1-hour house tours discussing the local health careavailable in the late 1800s\, sharing stories of Beekman health issues and“cures\,” and pointing out sanitation measures the family adopted will beginevery 20 minutes from 12 noon through 3pm. California. DESCRIPTION:JACKSONVILLE’S WILDFIRE Community Preparedness Day is back this October—with a new self-serve format. The event will take place on Saturday\, October 3\, from 9am-noon in the D Street Parking Lot. Please note: This year’s event will not include a chipper and no assistance will be provided for unloading materials. Residents are invited to bring branches and yard debris (6 feet or shorter) for disposal. Five dumpsters will be available for clean\, woody debris and yard waste. Participants must unload their own materials and are asked to place debris at the back of the dumpsters.The event is coordinated by the Jacksonville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in collaboration with the Jacksonville Fire Department. Wildfire Community Preparedness Days help raise awareness and reduce wildfire risks. Jacksonville remains especially vulnerable due to the number of homes located near woodlands and forested areas. Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps such as: \n\nRemoving dead vegetation and debris\nTrimming flammable trees and shrubs near structures\nPruning tree limbs to keep lower branches 6–10 feet off the ground\nClearing roofs\, gutters\, and yards of dry leaves and pine needles\n\nTake advantage of this opportunity to protect your home and help make Jacksonville a safer\, more fire-resilient community. Questions?
