SUMMARY:Jacksonville “Walk Through History” Tour
DESCRIPTION:Walk through Jacksonville History!  \nJACKSONVILLE\, OR—Jacksonville’s “Walk through History” tours are back!  At 10 a.m. every Saturday from May 30th through September 5th\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be offering one-hour guided walks through Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District\, the first on the West Coast!  Participants will take a stroll through history\, visiting government and commercial buildings\, fraternal lodges\, and homes that capture the stories of the people who transformed a gold rush town into Southern Oregon’s 19th Century social\, governmental\, and commercial hub. They’ll learn how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it.  \nWalking tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic “Courthouse Square”) at 206 North 5th Street between West C and D streets and cover about one mile with multiple stops.   Tours are FREE but donations are encouraged!  All monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of Jacksonville’s historic buildings.  \nFor individuals who prefer not to “stretch their legs\,” Historic Jacksonville’s website (https://www.historicjacksonville.org) offers numerous ways to explore Jacksonville virtually.  These include multiple blogs about the town and its settlers along with three video tours that introduce viewers to Jacksonville’s Historic Landmark District\, its Historic Homes\, and its Pioneer Cemetery.    \nHistoric Jacksonville\, Inc. invites you to forget the “names\, dates\, places\, and battles” version of history you may have been taught in school.  HJI’s live and virtual tours are about “real history”—people and their stories. They are about life!  \nAdditional information on “Walk through History” and other Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. tours is available at 541-245-3650; info@historicjacksonville.org; and www.historicjacksonville.org. \n

SUMMARY:Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony at The Britt Festival Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of nature in all its majesty\, Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony vividly evokes the sounds of summer — including babbling brooks\, birdsong\, and a violent storm — while the soaring soprano lines of Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 conjure equally tranquil scenes in a nostalgic exploration of family life in the American South. \nLearn more about the music and the artists by coming early for our 30-minute Pre-Concert Talk (excludes concerts with film and/or non-classical events).

SUMMARY:SOCAN Public General Meeting: "How to be Effective When Taking Climate Action"
DESCRIPTION:“How to be Effective When Taking Climate Action”  \nMany of us want to do what we can to addressthe climate crisis -for ourselves\, our youth\, and future generations. However\,it is challenging to identify how each of us individually can address thisissue meaningfully . To help us\, we will briefly revisit a January 2024 SOCANpresentation that featured Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson\, who developed  a 10-minute TED talk offering tips on thisprocess. Johnson  created a Venn diagram withthree circles overlapping in the center where we  identify (1) what gives us  joy\, (2) what we  are good at doing\, and (3) what we  could do to reduce our greenhouse gasemissions.   \nThe next SOCAN Public General meeting willfeature Flavia Franco from Southern Oregon Food Solutions. Flavia will shareher take on the Venn Diagram and how she is using a positive feedback loop tomake her intersection (in the diagram) grow bigger\, both personally and as acommunity\, as she focuses on the issues of food waste prevention\, reduction andcommunity compost. In order  to makeprogress – especially towards resilience – connections and relationships are key.A positive feedback loop can be used to build momentum in climate action eitherby being the center driver of the loop activity or by being a part of the loopitself. \nFlavia’s call to action is that if attendeeshaven’t done so already\, then some time should be used to create individualdiagrams\, to take stock of progress on this journey\, and to decide if coursecorrection is necessary for going further and to connect with others in orderto make progress. \nThe meeting is on Tuesday June 30th from 6:00 to 7:30 at the Medford Public Library\,205 S. Central Avenue\, Medford.  SOCAN’sgeneral meetings are free and open to the public. There is no charge forattending: https://socan.eco/events/where a link to Johnson’s video is also available. \nThis meeting is notsponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services
