SUMMARY:Jacksonville's Wildfire Community Preparedness Day
DESCRIPTION:JACKSONVILLE’S WILDFIRE Community Preparedness Day is back this October—with a new self-serve format. The event will take place on Saturday\, October 3\, from 9am-noon in the D Street Parking Lot. Please note: This year’s event will not include a chipper and no assistance will be provided for unloading materials. Residents are invited to bring branches and yard debris (6 feet or shorter) for disposal. Five dumpsters will be available for clean\, woody debris and yard waste. Participants must unload their own materials and are asked to place debris at the back of the dumpsters. The event is coordinated by the Jacksonville Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in collaboration with the Jacksonville Fire Department. Wildfire Community Preparedness Days help raise awareness and reduce wildfire risks. Jacksonville remains especially vulnerable due to the number of homes located near woodlands and forested areas. Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps such as: \n\nRemoving dead vegetation and debris\nTrimming flammable trees and shrubs near structures\nPruning tree limbs to keep lower branches 6–10 feet off the ground\nClearing roofs\, gutters\, and yards of dry leaves and pine needles\n\nTake advantage of this opportunity to protect your home and help make Jacksonville a safer\, more fire-resilient community. Questions? Please contact Linda Davis\, Jacksonville Firewise Coordinator\, lmdavis425@gmail.com\, 541-690-5688; or Jeff McFarland\, Deputy Firewise Coordinator\, jeffreymcfarland@charter.net\, 541-601-3926.

SUMMARY:1870s Beekman House Tours: Victorian Mourning Customs

We would appreciate your reminding your audience that on two Saturdays and Sundays\, October 3 and 4 and October 10 and 11\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be sharing how Victorians honored their “dearly departed” at Jacksonville’s 1870s Beekman House Museum\, located at 470 E. California Street. \nThe house will be decorated as a Victorian house in mourning—coffin in the parlor\, clocks stopped\, mirrors draped in black\, mourning wreath on the door.  One-hour tours will begin every 20 minutes from 12n through 3pm with costumed docents sharing “Victorian Mourning Customs” including fashions\, home décor\, funeral etiquette\, and social behavior\, as well as superstitions\, séances\, mementos\, and a few popular practices of the time that we would find bizarre today. \nTour admission is $10 and reservations are encouraged.  Tickets and information are available at https://www.historicjacksonville.org/victorian-theme-tours/. “Walk ups” are accommodated based on space available. SUMMARY:Jacksonville's NEW History Center Opening!
DESCRIPTION: Chamber Chat – Jacksonville Review October 2026 Issue:  On Saturday\, October 10\, from 10:30am-3pm\, we officially open Jacksonville’s new History Center inside the beautifully restored 1881 Old City Hall. This is the hub of our “Citywide Museum\,” the doorway into Jacksonville’s full story—from Indigenous history and the Gold Rush to the Chinese Quarter\, civic life\, and the preservation movement that saved the town. Step inside and explore interactive exhibits\, touchable artifacts\, AI narration\, QR-linked stories\, and the five themes that frame Jacksonville’s past: The Land\, The Gold Rush\, Merchants & Makers\, Government\, and Town Life. It’s the perfect way to begin your fall visit. \n Jacksonville Review September 2026 Issue: “The upcoming opening of the History Center in the 1881 Old City Hall on October 10th will soon provide a year round hub for exploring our National Historic Landmark District. Exhibits highlighting Indigenous history\, Oregon’s first Chinatown\, early Black communities\, women’s contributions\, and our Gold Rush origins will deepen our understanding of Jacksonville’s past while expanding cultural tourism beyond the summer season.” ~Chamber Chat “Then save the date—Saturday\, October 10th—for the formal opening of Jacksonville’s new History Center! The Center will be your doorway to Jacksonville’s “Citywide Museum\,” providing an overview of the history of the gold rush camp that became the 19th-century hub of Southern Oregon and introducing you to the many ways you can explore it.”~Historic Jacksonville\, Inc.

And who wants to be constantly keeping larger plants in check with laborious size reducing pruning? There is more need than ever for smaller growing shrubs and trees\, and it seems the plant/nursery industry is heeding that call. Bonni will share her faves for smaller spaces- from columnar and dwarf trees\, to compact versions of familiar plants\, as well as some exciting new selections!  It’s all about choosing wisely – right plant for the right place!Registration for class: $15 per person\, limited to 20 registrations\, 15% discount to class participants on day of class

SUMMARY:Shooting Star Nursery Class: Let’s make a Gravel Garden with Christie
DESCRIPTION:2026 Fall Classes (all classes at nursery unless noted otherwise): \nRegister at https://roguevalleynursery.com/classes/ \nOct. 17th-11:00-12:30\,  Let’s make a Gravel Garden with Christie—Inspired by so many amazing gardens and methods pioneered in Mediterranean climates\, we are ready to plant a new drought tolerant gravel garden! Christie will show you the process\, from design and plant selection through bed preparation and a sample planting.    The plants highlighted will all be very drought tolerant and mostly lower growing. This approach utilizes a super fast draining and low nutrient soil mix with a gravel mulch that helps these xeric plants take advantage of fall and winter weather without getting waterlogged or rotting in our typical freeze/thaw cycle. The resulting well established roots are ready to support spring and summer growth with more resilience and less irrigation needs. This concept is also perfect for a fire-wise application.Registration for class: $15 per person\, limited to 20 registrations\, 15% discount to class participants on day of class
