SUMMARY:“Summer Thursdays” at SOHS Hanley Farm
DESCRIPTION:Summer fun begins at Hanley Farm! \nThursday\, June 2\, from 4-8pm\, is the first “Summer Thursday” at the Farm. Summer Thursdays continue weekly thereafter\, up to and including Thursday\, September 1. Every week\, bring a picnic\, relax and enjoy the summer evening. Then stroll about the grounds\, take self-guided garden tours\, and tour historic Hanley House. There is a modest fee for Hanley House tours. However\, admission\, barn tours and everything else is free! \nThere’s something new every Thursday—House tours weekly\, “Old Barn” tours on first Thursdays\, Wagon Rides on third Thursdays—plus\, every Thursday there will be children’s games. \nTour the Hanley home: costumed docents will guide you through the house and share the history of the family and their home. The Hanley’s purchased the farm in 1857 and lived in a log cabin until the first part of their home was built in the 1860s. In 1875\, when Michael Hanley was a successful businessman and rancher\, the front section was built\, completing their two-story home. You’ll also learn some of the farm’s history. Native people lived on this land for centuries before the Europeans arrived\, and archeological finds are common. \nThe first Thursday of each month\, take a tour of the Farm’s “old barn\,” one of the oldest in Oregon that is still standing. The center portion was built in 1854 at the front of the farm\, by Hanley Road. In early 1900\, Alice Hanley had it moved to the back of the farm\, by Jackson Creek. Made of huge hand-hewn beams with pegs\, the barn was built as a stock and threshing barn. When the original second-story hayloft and center threshing floor were removed\, a hayfork system was installed. Wagons were driven into the barn\, and grains\, still on their stalks\, were spread on the floor. The heads were knocked from the stalks by beating with a flail. Bill Hanley\, in his biography “Feelin’ Fine\,” remembers doing this when he was a boy.

The famous motto of Rotary Clubs throughout the world is\, “Service Above Self.” And your little club takes that commitment very seriously. Not only do we support many local projects financially\, we are hands-on too. In recent years\, members of the Jacksonville Applegate Rotary Club have joined the Boy Scouts Troup #17 for their food drive\, put in a garden for education at Jacksonville Elementary School\, built a chicken coop at Hanley Farms\, painted the fence at Beekman House\, adopted three JV Cemetery blocks\, as well as numerous projects at Ruch Elementary School including safety road signs\, and Christmas gifts for economically challenged families in Ruch. The club also helps Britt Music and Arts Festival with their annual spring clean-up and popcorn sales at every single concert. Up until the pandemic hit\, our club members faithfully showed up at Jackson Elementary School in Medford every Friday to pack-up nutritious meals for students in need of food security. Recently\, this program was turned over to ACCESS with continued support from our Club and other Rogue Valley Rotary Clubs. Also\, during the pandemic\, we manufactured sanitizers and sewed masks for Pioneer Village. And each year\, we provide a 4-year college scholarship for one deserving student in the Rogue Valley. The list goes on and on…This update is to remind our community that all of the proceeds from the second annual Jacksonville-Applegate Rotary Poker Run event will go toward local projects. The Rotary Club’s next big local project scheduled for September 17\, is the Beekman House picket fence—hard to believe that it has been a decade since local Rotarians painted that white fence! Time to get to work. See ad this page.
