SUMMARY:TOWN HALL MEETING on the Jacksonville Development Code Revision
DESCRIPTION:Please Join Us for a Series of Town Halls! – by Ian Foster\, Planning Director\, City of Jacksonville  \nOver the past couple of years\, your Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) tasked with reviewing and updating the City’s Development Code has been hard at work carefully reviewing and revising the draft document. The project is a city initiative to clarify and improve regulations for development within the city\, including the rules for modifications to existing structures\, new construction\, the division of land\, and historic protections. We are at a point in this project where we want to share with you some of the key changes and major updates proposed with the new draft. We also want to hear from you as we are still in the draft phase. \nWhy are we doing this?—The current Development Code is long overdue for an update. The current version is inconsistent (sometimes even on the same page) and lacks clear standards. This leads to confusion among the public\, practitioners\, staff\, and the hearing bodies responsible for its administration. Ultimately\, the inconsistencies and lack of clarity are risky for the city. \nHow can I provide input?—We want you to be involved in the process. Through the combination of our website specifically crafted for this project: jacksonvillecodeupdate.com\, open CAC meetings that are also available on demand on the City’s website\, or through a series of townhalls\, we want your input. \nOver the next few months\, please join the CAC and members of the Committee for Citizen Involvement (CCI) for a series of townhall events for an in-depth review of the CAC’s work so far. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and to provide feedback. Here are the details: \n\nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022\, 5:30pm\nWednesday\, November 9\, 2022\, 6pm \nWednesday\, December 14\, 2022\, 5:30pm \n\nAll sessions will be located in the New City Hall Assembly Room\, 206 North Fifth Street\, Jacksonville\, OR. \nOctober 19: Introduction to the Project. The discussion will begin with an overview of the revised “permitted use” table. Staff will highlight key discussion points such as drive through services\, home occupations\, and short-term vacation rentals. \nNovember 9: Design and Site Development Standards: This session will focus on site development requirements. Topics will include setbacks\, landscape\, parking\, fence\, solar\, and sign standards. \nDecember 14: Environmental & Constrained Lands: This session will focus on environmental requirements\, to include riparian and wetland requirements\, as well as tree removal requirements\, and the Urban Wildland Interface. \nThis is the first series of town hall events. The CCI in coordination with the CAC will continue to host sessions as we move forward with the revision process. You can see more information and provide comments by visiting jacksonvillecodeupdate.com.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting: Jacksonville Wildfire Protection Project
DESCRIPTION:Community Meeting: Jacksonville Wildfire Protection Project\nTHURSDAY\, NOVEMBER 10\, 2022 AT 6 PM – 8 PM \nJacksonville City Hall\, 2nd Floor\, 206 N Fifth Street Jacksonville\, OR 9753 \n  \nPlease join us to learn about the Jacksonville Community Wildfire Protection Project — a strategic\, ecologically-minded restoration project to reduce the threat of wildfire within and around Jacksonville through fuels reduction treatments on private and municipal lands. The City of Jacksonville\, Jacksonville Woodlands Association\, and the local FireWise communities have joined forces with the Rogue Forest Partners\, including Lomakatsi Restoration Project\, local OSU Extension\, and Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative\, on this effort.  Together they have raised over $1.5 million to assist landowners and the City of Jacksonville in reducing wildfire risk through ecological thinning and prescribed fire. Using this funding\, landowners in project areas may be eligible for ecological fuels reduction on their property at no cost. All treatments are voluntary. During the Community Meeting\, partners will introduce themselves\, provide a brief overview of the project—including the initial area selected for treatment—and let community members know what they can expect. The first half of the meeting will conclude with a Q&A. Partners will be on hand for any follow-up conversations.   We’re excited to share more about this opportunity to do good work in and around Jacksonville to make the community safer and the ecosystem more resilient. No RSVP necessary. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Clayfolk Show and Sale at the Medford Armory
DESCRIPTION:Greek mythology tells the tale of the phoenix\, a magnificent bird that would build a nest in which to set itself on fire\, whereupon a new phoenix would arise from the flames and ashes. It’s an apt metaphor for Clayfolk\, a group of clay artists whose “nest” is in Southern Oregon and who have put on a magnificent show and sale every year for nearly a half-century…until COVID. \nBut now—after a two-year hiatus—Clayfolk is back! The group is figuratively arising out of its own fire and the ashes of its kilns to appear once again in the Clayfolk Show and Sale at the Medford Armory on the weekend before Thanksgiving\, November 18-20. Please note that the hours for the show are slightly different this year: \n\nFriday\, November 18\, 10am-7pm\nSaturday\, November 19\, 10am-7pm\nSunday\, November 20\, 10am-3pm\nAdmission is free!\n\nThere you will see work by your favorite clay artists from Jacksonville and surrounding areas: Ray Foster\, Nancy Adams\, Ray Noppa\, Jane Anderson\, Jim Nordal\, Kris Schumacher\, and Nancy Stewart—as well as others from all over Southern Oregon\, Northern California\, the Willamette Valley\, and beyond. To preview some of the work at the Clayfolk Show and Sale\, please visit the gallery on the Clayfolk website at https://www.clayfolk.org/member-gallery/. \nThe Show will feature raku pots that have been plunged into a cauldron of fire burning at over a thousand degrees\, stoneware mugs and plates that have endured hellish heat soaring to over 2100 degrees\, and exquisite porcelain pieces that vitrified at temperatures comparable to the stars. You will\, of course\, see functional pieces and whimsical ones\, amazing sculpture\, flowery majolica\, scraffito\, “thrown” pots\, slab-built pots\, and among the artists themselves\, the occasional crackpot. \nWhat’s new? The downtime during COVID allowed many Clayfolk members to experiment with new techniques and build their inventories. The science underlying ceramics has also leaped forward\, with chemists developing new and brighter colors that have attracted the interest of many local ceramists. Others continue to explore the cutting-edge possibilities of creating new glaze surfaces in computer-controlled kilns. Still others\, however\, lean toward the subtle\, earthy hues produced by the flame-induced vapors of salt\, soda\, and—yes—ashes. \nAs always\, there will be demonstrations of “throwing” on the potter’s wheel and other clay-fabrication techniques. All the artists in the show will be there in person with their wares\, eager to talk with you about their craft. Kids can get clay on their hands at the Children’s Demonstration Station\, and if you are there on Sunday\, you will have a chance to win the periodic drawing. \nSo\, set your GPS on November 18\, 19\, or 20 for the Medford Armory at 1701 S Pacific Hwy\, Medford\, OR 97501. The Armory is just off the South Medford exit from I-5.
